The three trim rings hold the housing in place and once they are removed the housing is free. It will probably take a little coaxing after many years on the car.
OPTIONAL - For ease of installation the tail light socket in this example was cut from the harness and fitted with blade type connectors. Most wiring harnesses are in pretty bad shape and it might be a good idea to replace the complete socket assembly.
